A POEM ON PAIN

By Jim Bristow

 In My dreams,
Pain lingers like some evil shadow.
It reaches out from dark, inner corners
To rob my body of well being

spinning-button

When finally my mind
Claws its way back
Into the stark realm of reality and I wake,
Pain steps boldly from behind the shadows
To claim its relentless hold on me
In the light of consciousness

spinning-button

A new day dawns and once again
The dreaded pain declares openly
Its total mastery over
All my waking hours

spinning-button

No movement or even single step
Will be free from this hated companion
Even inactivity can not save me
From pain's haunting grip on my life

spinning-button

Pain has become the cruel master
Of my physical self in every way
It seeks to conquer and destroy

spinning-button

Pain however is not without limit
In its brutal quest
To vanquish the joy
Of being alive

spinning-button

Its power can rule over
All my physical boundaries
But it can not breach the invincible walls
Of my mind, my soul and spirit

spinning-button

These wondrous and most private Realms
Of my existence are mine alone
A place where I can be totally free
From any unwanted visitor

spinning-button

It is in these special halls of my being
That I alone am master
It is in these undefeatable vaults]
Of my allotted time on earth
That the true quality of my joy of life
Is protected

spinning-button

While pain can most certainly be
A disparaging companion
There will always be
Those secret parts of me
That can put the unwelcome assault of pain
In its place

spinning-button

These are the champions of
My inner resolve
That declare and stand for my right
To appreciate and to enjoy to the fullest
Each and every wonder
Of my increasingly fragile hold on life
